Behind the scenes of a creation: my Japandi side table using Chat-GPT!

A project to push my limits
After completing my last creation, I set out to find a new project that would be both stimulating and slightly more complex. I wanted an additional challenge to continue growing and exploring new ideas.
To be honest, I wasn't sure where to start. I needed a little help finding a style that was both on-trend and aligned with my craft vision. That's when I came up with the idea of using ChatGPT to help me brainstorm. And yes, a little virtual help to spark creativity!
After a few discussions, the idea of a Japandi side table emerged as a no-brainer. This style, which fuses Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian warmth, perfectly matched what I wanted to create: a piece that was understated, elegant, and original. Let's just say it wasn't a robot that made the table, but it did help me find inspiration!
From idea to final design
I wanted a table that stood out for its simplicity while still having a visually striking feel. The top was to be round, made of solid walnut, with a diameter of 24 inches. To add a sophisticated touch, I chose an inverted chamfer all around, giving the illusion of a lighter, floating top.
As for the legs, I wanted something solid but refined. So I opted for three walnut legs, fixed with blocks forming an L with 6-degree angles to be able to fix them with "threaded inserts". This detail allowed me to maintain the visual balance while bringing a more technical side to the manufacturing.
Unforeseen events in the process
Like any woodworking project, this one wasn't without its pitfalls. One of the major challenges was drilling for the leg assembly. Without a drill press on hand, I had to improvise with a plywood jig to ensure straight drilling with a Forstner bit.
The first bit I bought turned out to be way too aggressive, making drilling difficult and imprecise. After a quick trip back to the store, I finally invested in a more suitable set of Forstner bits, and everything went smoothly. It's these kinds of little mishaps that make each project unique and educational!
A finish that makes the difference
To enhance the walnut grain, I chose to apply a coat of Odie's Oil , a natural finish that highlights the warmth and texture of the wood. This oil provides a matte, silky finish while protecting the surface from everyday wear and tear.
When I finally assembled the table and applied the finish, I knew this piece had something special. The Japandi table, with its minimalist look and noble materials, reflects exactly what I was looking for: a balance between technique, aesthetics, and personal challenge.
What I remember from it
This project allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and explore a more elaborate design than my previous work. Thanks to a little virtual inspiration (thanks, ChatGPT!), I managed to create a table that reflects my personality while adding a touch of modernity to my portfolio.
Sometimes all it takes is a little push to dare to try something different. The robot didn't make the table, but let's just say it made a significant contribution to the ideation phase!
