My Favorite Wood: Why I Work with Walnut

A choice that naturally imposes itself

When I started making furniture for Leonard Woodcraft, I was immediately drawn to walnut. There's something special about this wood that sets it apart from other species, and it's become my material of choice.

What first attracted me was its rich and deep natural color.

Unlike other lighter or more uniform woods, walnut offers a range of tones that range from chocolate brown to deep black, sometimes with lighter, golden hues at the ends. This variety creates a captivating visual contrast, especially when the grain is highlighted by the finish.

The magical effect of the finish

What I particularly like about walnut is the dramatic transformation that occurs when I apply the finish. Before this step, the wood is a neutral, almost dull beige. But as soon as I apply the oil, the grain comes to life and reveals all its depth. It's as if the wood suddenly wakes up. For me, it's always an impressive and exciting moment to witness this metamorphosis.

This is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work: the transition from raw wood to a warm, vibrant piece. It's my favorite part of the manufacturing process, and it reminds me why I love working with this wood so much.

A timeless and high-end aesthetic

Walnut has a unique ability to combine elegance and understated elegance. Its timeless, high-end appeal makes it a perfect choice for refined and durable furniture. Whether used for a side table or a serving board, walnut always brings that special touch that captures attention.

I haven't yet explored other woods in my creations, but walnut remains a natural choice for me. Its texture, color, and feel are in perfect harmony with my vision of craftsmanship that is both authentic and aesthetic.

The Japandi table: a perfect balance

If I had to name one creation I'm particularly proud of, it would undoubtedly be my Japandi side table. This project embodies exactly what I love about walnut: a subtle blend of the characteristic dark hue and the lighter shades, often referred to as the "blond" of the wood.

On this table, the contrast is particularly well balanced, bringing a touch of lightness and harmony to the design. For me, this play of colors is what makes each piece unique and authentic, and it's exactly what I seek to convey through my creations.

Why walnut will remain my favorite

Working with walnut is like engaging in a dialogue with a living material that evolves with each step. It challenges me to be precise and attentive, while offering an incomparable visual reward with each finish.

For me, walnut is more than just a wood: it's a partner in my quest for artisanal perfection. As long as I continue to create furniture, this noble and elegant material will remain at the heart of my projects.

And you, what do you think of walnut?

If you have any questions or suggestions for my upcoming projects, please leave me a comment! I'm always curious to know what you think of my material choices and creations.
